Our Story

Let us gather for mutual benefit. And beer.

Some of the best things happen over beer. Ideas are born, friendships forged, deals struck. Village Brewery began that way too, with friends sharing beers and dreams for a community brewery. A brewery that would support Calgary’s artists and craftspeople. A brewery that would create the excellent ales and lagers our friends and neighbors deserve. It takes a village to raise a beer. And a beer to raise a village.

Behind The Label

EACH LETTER IN "VILLAGE" IS ONE OF A KIND, JUST LIKE THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE UP A VILLAGE.

Each letter is handcrafted too, in contrast to "Brewery" which uses a modern font. We're a mix of old and new – a village in a modern city, a business venture dedicated to supporting the arts and a brewery that makes traditional ales in an industrial age. We love technology that brings us together and we hate technology that takes the craft – and the flavour – out of brewing. And even though we think of ourselves as a progressive modern brewery we honour the long tradition of beer making, and we still craft it by hand.

Brewmaster Larry Kerwin

What might compel a man on the brink of retirement, a man with over 40 years of brewing experience, a man renowned as one of the most accomplished brewers in an accomplished beer nation – what might entice such a man to shrug it all off and throw in his lot with a fledgling brewery? Every brewer worth their salt knows the answer already: it's the chance to get back to the roots. Brewing small-batch handcrafted beers with premium ingredients is the life every brewmaster dreams of on long winter nights.

For Larry, the chance to mentor a new generation of brewers was the icing on the cake. The lads are learning from the best.

Beer Barons

Village Brewery is proud to have assembled a group of Beer Barons: 50 Calgarians of accomplishment chosen for a history of making Calgary a better place to live. Under the Village banner our Barons have pledged to work collectively to do further good for our community. And there's no pledge more binding than one you make over beers.

The Artist Barons

It takes a Village to do anything worthwhile. Things more important, even, than brewing beer – like supporting arts and culture.
